Wool tapestry, framed

Agressivité pure is a striking example of Émile Gilioli’s exploration of form, color, and emotional intensity through textile art. A pale pink silhouette—suggestive of a battleship—cuts across a bold yellow field, evoking momentum and latent power through minimalist abstraction. Though primarily celebrated as a postwar sculptor, Gilioli turned to tapestry in 1949, drawn to the tactile richness of wool and the formal possibilities of graphic design. He collaborated closely with Aubusson’s master weavers, particularly the Pinton and Picaud workshops, producing around a hundred tapestries over his lifetime. In this work, Gilioli distills the idea of aggression into a serene, geometric language, merging sculptural clarity with the expressive potential of woven form. Manufactured by Atelier Raymond Picaud, Aubusson. Edition 1/6.
