A collaboration between Achille Salvagni and Fabio Gnessi, Aldus aims to revive the aesthetic ideals of Greek and Latin philosophy. They draw both name and inspiration from Renaissance scholar Aldus Manutius, whose publications remain to this day a remarkable compendium of the humanities. Manutius was deeply passionate for the Rome of antiquity and espoused as his motto “festina lente”—Latin for “hurry slowly,” or the notion of thought before action. “Today, with this same inspiration,” the designers write, “the Aldus collection interprets the rich history and culture of classical Rome through form, material, and the highest level of attention to detail in craftsmanship.” Their functional and aesthetic objects alike fuse organic forms and Latinate imagery with a distinctly contemporary mastery of material and abstraction.
