Pair of Napoleon III Urns with Original Polychromy

France, circa 1875

Cast iron, polychrome paint

ACC 254

Description

Cast iron, polychrome paint

Height: 17.25" - Width of base: 9.5" - Depth: 9.5" - Diameter of top: 13.5"

Retaining their original polychromy in the neo-Gothic style, these pieces represent a trend typical of the Second Empire—large planters intended for exterior spaces with either intricate relief designs or significant embossing or painting. The motifs here are a blend of nature and nobility. Blooming flowers are visible alongside a Teutonic cross with fleurs-de-lis on its ends, looking almost like the seal of a lordly family.
