On the island of Vieques, close to where Lopez is originally from, is a silk cotton tree that has always intrigued him, both for its age (it’s at least a thousand years old), and its amazing thorns—big, asymmetrical, and prehistoric.
Attaching “thorns” onto the glass of these vases the artist felt them to be alive, not only physically, via pieces’ unruly and exuberant forms, but also in the exterior space they inhabit and within their mysterious interiors. Positioned on luminous pedestals, they recall the wild tree of his childhood. “For me, the space and the energy inside and behind their surface radiates with the energy born in the fire of their conception."
