Taking inspiration from the Roman auxiliaries’ short javelin, Lancea, recalls the pole weapon, fashioned as if piercing through the silk shade of the lamp and emerging through the top as a finial. This elegant silhouette is assisted by the warm glow of the double-lined Japanese silk used for the unusual, structured shade and diffuser which takes its inspiration from women’s panniers as used in the 17th and 18th centuries to give dresses their bell shape. The light contrasts with the dark finish of the stem and is reflected in the polished bronze orb at the top of the base.
