Juan Busquets

Art Nouveau Painted Wood Planter in the Catalan Modernisme Style

Spain, 1904

BUSQJ 02

Description

Medium: Giltwood, paint

Dimensions: 19.5 in high x 42.5 in wide x 17 in deep

An elaborate planter with a flowing giltwood frame and painted images of floral arrangements on each side. The piece was created by Joan Busquets, the remarkable Spanish Art Nouveau furniture maker often overshadowed by his contemporary and collaborator Gaudi. This is a clear example of Catalan Modernisme, an answer to other such fin de siècle design movements in Europe such as Jugendstil, Secession, and Art Nouveau.
